About This Site
Get Senior Mobility Aids is written by Hal Brockman, a retired rural mail carrier outside Tupelo, Mississippi, who learned after a hip replacement which mobility aids actually earn their keep. We publish plain, first-hand reviews, comparisons and how-to guides on five everyday aids: a rollator walker with a seat, a folding free-standing cane, a shower chair with a back, a bed assist rail and a reacher grabber. Nothing here is medical advice; your doctor or physical therapist should always have the final word on fit and use.

Mobility Aid Safety
Mobility aids lower the risk of a fall only when they fit and are used the way the maker intends. Have a doctor or physical therapist set the height of any walker, rollator or cane, and check it again after a surgery, an illness or a change in shoes. A handle set too high or too low makes you lean and can make a fall more likely, not less.
Lock the brakes on a rollator before you sit on its seat or stand up from it, and never ride on it or let someone push you on it like a wheelchair. Check that every push-button pin has clicked fully into its hole on a cane, walker or shower chair before putting weight on it, and replace worn rubber tips and feet promptly, because a smooth tip slides on wet floors.
Wet bathroom floors are where many falls happen. Use a non-slip mat, keep a shower chair's legs on a level surface inside the stall, and do not use a towel bar or soap dish as a grab bar. A bed assist rail must be secured exactly as its instructions describe, with any strap fastened, and checked for looseness regularly; never leave a gap between the rail and the mattress where an arm, leg or head could become trapped. Respect every weight limit printed on a product's label. If you feel dizzy, weak or unsteady in a new way, stop and talk to your doctor before relying on any aid.
